Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 1981, Niamh Collins has been a practising professional artist, specialising in colourful abstract painting in oil, on canvas and on paper. She has exhibited widely, both in the UK and abroad, and several of her works are in private and public collections. As a student she was inspired by a mixture of art forms, ranging from medieval manuscripts to the 20th century abstract expressionists, particularly Kandinsky, Miro and Klee. The abstract paintings are often a response or reaction to an emotional situation or event which might occur during the course of that painting’s development. This is often very personal and private, and sometimes hinted at in the title. As well as applying paint with brushes, rags, hands, fingers and palette knives, she experiments with printing techniques, using clothes belonging to friends and family, along with shoes, cardboard and other found materials. While these printed details provide abstract patterns and structure, and an element of surprise and randomness, they also hint at references to experiences outside the painting. Although the paintings are abstract, they sometimes have a landscape-type space, and may contain subtle references to land and sea.
